Bruxism (teeth grinding)

Commonly known as teeth grinding, bruxism is an involuntarily gnashing or rubbing of the teeth. It is most often noticed during sleep but can occur just as much during the day.

The impairments caused by bruxism:

  • Worn or flattened teeth
  • Loss of tooth enamel
  • Headaches or ear pain
  • facial or jaw joint tension
  • Breakage of dental restorations

It is mistakenly believed that only children suffer from it, while about 8% of adults are reported to grind their teeth. Stress and anxiety may be triggers, but the exact causes are yet to be discerned. Hence, this condition is often treated through relaxation therapy and lifestyle tips. An oral splint may also be prescribed to minimize tooth damage.
